Well.... we finally have an Arcam AVR600 receiver on demo at the Nottingham store. But there is a catch; As we only have it on trial and have not yet bought it, we only have it until the end of the month.
The main question that we would foresee being asked is 'was it worth the wait?', to which our answer would have to be a resounding 'yes!'. I think we're all in agreement that this is the best sounding AV receiver that we have ever had in store, if a little too heavy for us to really want to drag into the demo room (it's a hard life sometimes!)!
We have used the AVR600 now for a week or so and have thoroughly enjoyed our time with it so far. It has behaved itself in a typical Arcam way, never sounding brash or hard at loud volumes, but still capable of a big room-filling sound. It seems almost obvious talking about the sound of this product...it's an AV receiver and it's Arcam. Job done. If you're wondering why it would be obvious and have not heard an Arcam before, it's simple - they excel at producing a product that is (generall) no frills but sounds awesome. This is one product they have managed to keep relatively frill-heavy but still sounds every inch one of Arcams best.
On the features front, you have your standard issue 5 HDMI in and 2 out, as well as all current surround sound processing modes and features, as expected. What is not as expected is that Arcam have also put on an Ethernet port, giving the AVR600 the option of streaming from the Internet or your PC - this sort of feature really is a first for Arcam, showing what technological boundaries they've crossed with this amplifier. Speaking of boundaries, this receiver has such great video processing, it will actually even improve your picture!
The fact that the AVR600 has all of these features, yet still retains its sound quality is testament to the ingenuity of Arcams solid engineering!
Come and demo one whilst you can!
